The Carlisle Castle

    Carlisle, Cumbria, was started by King William II in 1093, and rebuilt in stone in 1157 by Henry II; during 1173-1461 the castle was attacked nine times, and in 1568 Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner in the castle; in 1745 the Jacobite army of “Bonnie Prince Charlie” took the castle on its way south. Great restoring work was done in the 1800’s. The castle has been in the hands of the military without break for 800 years and is now also home to the museum of the Kings Own Border Regiment and the Border Regiment. [photo gallery]
