The house is a remarkably unspoilt example of a Jacobean manor house. It opened to the public in 1992 but still retains the intimate atmosphere of a much loved family home. Under the watchful gaze of the Wright ancestors’ portraits you will visit the beautiful, stone-flagged hall, unique tapestry room, the bedroom with its magnificent tester bed and the nursery with toys from 1860 to the present day. Other rooms reveal costumes belonging to the Wright family, precious artifacts and fascinating family momentos. The observant visitor may even see our resident ghost, Sarah Mills, who drowned in Wright’s well and still answers the night bell!
Here, more than three centuries ago, residents infected with the Black Plague took the heroic decision to seal themselves off to prevent the disease spreading to other communities. It was the firs lockdown self-imposed by inhabitants.
