In this video we take a walk around Dunstaffnage castle near Oban, Scotland. Dunstaffnage Castle is one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland built in the 13th century by Clan Macdougall. It was captured by King Robert the Bruce in 1309 after defeating the Clan Macdougall in the Pass of Brander. In the 1470 the Clan Campbell were appointed Hereditary Captain of Dunstaffnage. An appointment that stands to this day. Dunstaffnage castle is haunted by the ghost of “Ell-maid of Dunstaffnage” who roams the ramparts dressed in green. The prefix dun in the name means “fort” in Gaelic, while the rest of the name derives from Norse stafr-nis, “headland of the staff”. Dunstaffnage Castle sits on a platform of rock at the entrance of Loch Etive and is surrounded by sea on three sides. Dunstaffnage Castle is one of the best castles near Oban to visit and is sometimes referred to as Oban Castle.
