Dorset, impressive ruins of a castle which was built 1000 years ago, and had its best period in the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1635 the castle was bought by Sir John Bankes, and as he was the supporter of the king castle was destroyed by the parliamentary forces during the English civil war after a long siege in 1646. The Bankes later built a new house at Kingston Lacy after the Restoration.
