In 2011-2012, taking advantage of the economic crisis that brought less commercial orders in the graphics and media area, I had some free time. Then I started several series of works in various digital techniques.
Pixopictura
“Pixopictura” tried to create a mix of visual expression between photographic, digital and pictorial techniques. In fact, painting was the center of the whole thing, because painting started everything in visual arts (at least in the modern ages of art). In the Pixopictura works I used more impasto touches, not because I particularly prefer them, but because their effect is much more obvious when photographically collaged. I like Impressionism – from where we have impasto techniques today – but not particularly. I prefer Expressionism, for the strength of the ensemble, and the Northern Renaissance for the exploratory spirit. Anyway, I published a few works in the series then, and sold a few. After 2012, I only accidentally produced anything else in this series and generally had quite a bit of time. When, during the pandemic, I found myself again with a lot of time on my head, the plastic exercises were mainly in digital painting. And this year the exercises went to AI-generated or AI-edited graphics.
I recently rediscovered the works in the Pixopictura series and published some of them on Deviant Art and Artmajeur (where they can also be purchased). The surprise was that the ones I considered the best were less appreciated than the ones I considered so-and-so. From my point of view, the series expresses not only the exploration of a mix of visual techniques, but also document a certain stage of digital editing, where technical limitations (compared to today) and still low resolution (due to low computing power) forced creativity to explore other modes of expression and build a language with only a few syllables at their disposal.
