The north and south wings were added during the 1720&#8217;s. It is known for its collection of portraits and poems of the servants who worked there, as well as its beautiful walled garden and real tennis court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Yorke family<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Incredibly, the Yorke family owned Erddig for 240 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Yorke I inherited Erddig from his uncle, John Meller, in 1733, and remarkably, each successive owner was called either Philip Yorke or Simon Yorke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telling the whole story of the Yorke family could spawn pages and pages\u2026it\u2019s a dynasty that lasted until 1973, when Phillip Yorke III handed over Erddig to the National Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did this as neither he nor his brother were married \u2013 hence no direct heirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each Yorke added their own personal touches to make Erddig the place it is today\u2026for example, Phillip Yorke I added the saloon and library to Erddig Hall, and Simon Yorke III made extensive alterations to the gardens and added the music room. <\/p>\n<cite>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wrexham.gov.uk\/5-interesting-things-about-erddig\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/news.wrexham.gov.uk\/5-interesting-things-about-erddig\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official Wrexham web site<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wrexham, Clwyd, Wales; a fascinating house where the unusually close relationship existed between the family of the house and their servants in 19th and early 20th century; fine state rooms Erddig Hall: Erddig Hall \u00a0Nr Wrexham was built\u00a0 between 1684 and 1687 during the reign of James II.
